When people think of us, they don’t normally think “wedding.” You might have attended an exhibit opening at the Ohio History Center or visited Ohio Village on a field trip as a student. But we actually do lots of weddings and special events each year. Our spaces are unique and versatile and lend themselves to a truly special experience for you and your guests.

Maggie and Josh were one of the first couples I worked with when I started working for the Ohio History Connection. The first thing I noticed about Maggie was her smile and relaxed manner.  She and her fiancé were excited to find a venue that could host both their ceremony and reception. They were a great couple to start my new position with because of their easy-going personalities. Ohio Village is perfect place for a ceremony. Set in the 19th century, this town offers a variety of unique spaces that can be catered to your needs. Our Victorian-era church houses beautiful woodwork and stained glass windows.  Plus, you can host your own officiant and get married in a traditional church setting.

On her wedding day bride Maggie and her party chose our Victorian Room at the American House Hotel as their ready space.

“I loved getting ready in the historic hotel!” Maggie said, “It was such a fun and special time with my bridesmaids.  It was a beautiful space to get ready in and we were able to relax and enjoy each other, a moment of peace in the chaos of the day.”

Meanwhile, the grrom and his men kept the Ohio Village streets safe for the arriving guest! With several historic spaces and buildings, there’s a variety of great backdrops for your photos.

The decorations for the ceremony were beautifully understated in the church, allowing for the bride and groom to steal the show.  Maggie said her favorite moment of the day was the moment when the church doors opened and she saw Josh at the altar for the first time.  “The music filled the church and everyone turned to look at me.  I’ll never forget it.”

While the couple took pictures at different spots in Ohio Village, specialty cocktails were served to their guests on the Plaza Terrace in the Ohio History Center. Our Plaza Terrace offers a modern take for your reception, and your guests can explore our exhibits and collections during the evening. Maggie and Josh’s guests also enjoyed lawn games out on the plaza’s green.  Inside, the catering staff from Weiland’s put together a delicious buffet for the couple and their 250 friends and family. After dinner the couple invited the students from their church’s youth group to join the party for dancing and desserts.

Josh and Maggie’s first dance as husband and wife was to “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You” by Lauryn Hill.

Maggie’s advice to couples planning now:
“Prioritize!  If something matters to you, take the time to make it special!  If you don’t have a strong opinion about something, why stress about it?  Letting go of minor details saved me a lot of stress.  It freed my husband and I up to enjoy the wedding plan process instead of getting weighed down.”

If you’re interested in planning a unique event experience with us, we’d love to hear from you! We can walk you through all your potential ceremony and reception options so that your event is one for the history books.
