First Congregational Church of Claridon
Preservation Merit
Founded in 1831, the First Congregational Church of Claridon has served as a hub for worship and community for nearly two centuries. Built with local timber and stone, the church reflects the craftsmanship and building techniques of its time. Over the years, the congregation has adapted the structure to meet evolving needs. For instance, they added a lower-level fellowship hall in 1955. Later, in 1966, they renovated the church while preserving its historic charm. In recognition of these efforts, the church was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.
Preservation has always been a priority for the congregation. When the sanctuary ceiling collapsed in June 2021, they responded with determination. Members organized bake sales, auctions, and a benefit concert. They also used modern tools like a GoFundMe page to raise the necessary funds. With help from restoration experts, the congregation restored the sanctuary. By January 2022, they celebrated the completion of the project with a Sanctuary Dedication Celebration.
Today, the First Congregational Church of Claridon stands as a testament to the community’s dedication to preserving their history. It continues to honor both the spiritual and historical significance of this beloved landmark.
