The Ohio Landsknechts

Our unit represents individuals from a fighting force of the early to mid-16th Century in Central Europe known as Landsknechts. Landsknechts were outrageously dressed mercenary fighters that were also known as “The Emperors Troops” due to their strong association with the Holy Roman Emperor Maximillian the First. The Landsknecht were not only the premier fighting force of their period but they also traveled with their families and an entire city to provide support for them. This allows us to present not only military information, such as weapons and tactics from the beginning of the Pike and Shot era of warfare but we also show and discuss many other aspects of life in the period from embroidery, bobbin lace and other textile arts, clothing and dress practices, discussions of medicine and general life such as food, religion, games and other pastimes.

Ongoing Displays, Nov.16:

Vikings of Vulksgaard

The media often portrays the Vikings as dirty, leather-clad Danes wearing horned helmets and IKEA sheepskin rugs. The truth is while they were notorious warriors and pirates, they were also gifted craftspeople and traders from all over the North Atlantic with a wide range of identity and skill, much like the members of our group today. In the spirit of historical accuracy and to honor the real Vikings of old, we invite everyone of all backgrounds to come and join us.

WWI YMCA Canteen Worker Display

During the First World War the YMCA provided services to American soldiers both at home and overseas. The types of helpful programs offered by the YMCA included, recreational, religious and canteen services. During March Through Time, you can learn more about the YMCA's involvement in WWI!
