As part of the statewide Ohio Open Doors celebration, we invite you to explore the rich history of Hayesville and Vermillion Township. This unique event highlights historic buildings and sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Featured Locations:

Ashland County Wildlife Conservation League Homestead
Located at 1930 County Road 1035, just west of Hayesville, this historic farmstead offers a glimpse into the agricultural past of the region. Follow the signs down a narrow driveway to discover the homestead and barns that have stood the test of time.

Hayesville Opera House
Situated at 5 ½ East Main Street, at the intersection of Routes 60 and 179, the Hayesville Opera House is an 1886 historic theater. Explore the backstage area and view signatures of performers, including the Ashland Symphony, which held its first dress rehearsal here in 1926. Please note, the Opera House is located on the second floor, accessible by a staircase with 25 steps—no elevator is available.

Vermillion Institute
Visit the 1843 site of Ashland County’s first private four-year college at 150 East Main Street. The main classroom building, dating back to 1845, was instrumental in the founding of the College of Wooster under the Presbyterian Church in 1857.

Hayesville Hardware Store/Kelley Building
Located at 7 East Main Street, this building, constructed in 1884, was originally the meeting lodge for the International Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF). Today, it serves as an apartment building, but visitors can still see the IOOF logo on the second floor.

Old Hayesville Hardware Store (IOOF Meeting Lodge)
Discover the old Hayesville Hardware Store, which served as the meeting lodge for the International Order of Odd Fellows on its second floor. Built in 1884, this building is an essential part of Hayesville’s history and now functions as an apartment building. Spot the IOOF logo on the second floor and delve into its past.
