On Sunday, September 8th the Galion History Center will open Brownella Cottage and the Galion History Museum & Gift Shop (located in the Carriage House) free of charge from 1-4 p.m.!
Brownella Cottage, built in 1887, is the historic home of controversial Bishop William Montgomery Brown. Bishop William Brown and his wife Ella are the only two people to live in Brownella Cottage and the home remains a time capsule of their life -filled entirely with its original furniture. Discover the story of Bad Bishop Brown – the first person in United States history to be convicted of Heresy. Our Red Bishop Audio Tour delves into his successful career in the Episcopal Church, his changing beliefs, his support of Communism, and his Heresy Trials and Deposition from the Episcopal House of Bishops in 1924/25.
A self-guided tour of Brownella Cottage takes you through a Victorian Era home filled with all its original furniture – a rare house museum, indeed! Encounter antique and locally made Victorian Gothic furniture mixed with furniture of the Arts and Crafts movement, original belongings of the Brown family, a “state of the art” intercom system outfitted for the home, and so much more!
The Galion History Museum & Gift Shop, located in the Brownella Cottage Carriage House, features exhibits on Galion Businesses, Galion Artists, “Through Their Eyes: Children in Early Galion”, “The Leamings: A Victorian Love Story”, Tony’s Pastry Shop, Galion Harley Davidson, “Nazi War Trophies: Confiscated & Looted” and so much more!
We look forward to seeing you and helping you discover Galion history!
