Join us to view the Alignment of Northernmost Moonrise at the Octagon of the Newark Earthworks!

The Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks embody Indigenous connections of sky, earth and water. The Earthworks are places of community and gathering; a place to connect as people. These connections are evident by the construction of the earthen walls of these monuments to align with both solar and lunar events. 2,000 years ago, people from all over North America would likely gather to witness these stunning events. The lunar alignment at the Octagon of the Newark Earthworks is remarkable. The avenue connecting the Octagon to its Observatory Circle aligns with the northernmost moonrise; an event that only occurs every 18.6 years!

We hope that you'll come and join us to witness this once in a generation event and learn about Indigenous knowledge and how it is embodied in the earthworks right here in Ohio! Join us for a panel discussion on astronomy and earthworks at 10 a.m., and afterward set off on a guided tour of the Octagon at 11 a.m. that will lead you to the perfect place to view the Northernmost Moonrise. Then, enjoy some history and astronomy-based activities in the Octagon Visitor Center until 4 p.m.
