Slocum Hall: A Historic Library Restored for the 21st Century
Built in 1898, Slocum Hall was the central library at Ohio Wesleyan University for many years. As noted in its nomination, the library’s reading room and the entire building symbolized the ideals of a liberal arts education. The recent challenge was to preserve its historic character while modernizing the space to meet the needs of today’s students and staff. The results are both functional and stunning.
Completed in 2022, the $11.5 million renovation brought significant updates to Slocum Hall. The building now features air conditioning, a fire-suppressing sprinkler system, and improved accessibility. A discreet ramp allows everyone to enter through the main door, and an elevator provides access to all floors. These upgrades ensure the building is welcoming to all without detracting from its historic charm.
Other thoughtful additions include built-in lamps on the reading room tables with outlets to charge laptops and phones. The restoration also revitalized a stained-glass skylight that depicts notable figures from western and American history. Custom display cases now showcase artifacts from Ohio Wesleyan’s past, further connecting the building to the university’s heritage.
Slocum Hall once again serves as the heart of Ohio Wesleyan’s campus. Its blend of historic beauty and modern convenience makes it a place where the university’s traditions and future come together.
