The St. John African Methodist Episcopal Church was Worthington’s first African American church. The congregation was founded as Bethel AME Church in 1897, and this building was constructed in 1914 when it was renamed St. John. The congregation worshipped here until 2004 and retains ownership of the church. This building has served as a religion and social hub of Worthington’s Black community for more than a century.
