Kwanzaa is a 7 - day celebration that honors community, family and heritage of African American culture and African traditions. Kwanzaa comes from the Swahili word that means “first harvest” and is based on the principles of Nguzo Saba. Ohio History Connection and TAWI Family Village will present two days of Kwanzaa that will feature music, dance, storytelling and hands-on art activities.

The events at the Ohio History Center with be part of events that are taking place throughout the community. Activities at the Ohio History Center will only be held on December 29th and December 30th. The program is free but advance registration is recommended.

December 26 - 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. Opening ceremony at Lincoln Theater

December 27 - 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. King Arts Complex Kwanzaa Market Place

December 28 - 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. King Arts Complex Kwanzaa Market Place

December 29 - 4 p.m. - 8 p.m. Ohio History Center Kwanzaa Celebration

  • 4 p.m. - Doors open
  • 5-5:30 p.m. - Processional, drumming, candle lighting
  • 5:30 p.m. - Afrobeats demo and instruction
  • 5:30-7 p.m. - Food Demos - Rahmundo Imani
  • 6 p.m. - Donna
  • 6:30 p.m. - Sassy Bo Fro Violinists
  • 7 p.m. - Emmy Award Winning Poet - JG
  • 7:30 p.m. - Line Dancing - Nikki Burton

December 30 - 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. Ohio History Center Kwanzaa Celebration

  • 11 a.m. - Doors open
  • Noon-12:30 p.m. - Processional, drumming, candle Lighting
  • 12:30-2 p.m. - Food demo - Kwojo
  • 1 p.m. - Bankema Dance Group
  • 1:30 p.m. - Storytelling
  • 2:30 p.m. - Oak City
  • 2-3 p.m. - Line dancing - Pickney Sisters
