When the United States entered World War I in April 1917, thousands of Americans answered the call to service. Ohio, in particular, played a key role in providing manpower for the U.S. Armed Forces. During the war 256,307 Ohioans served in the military, with 224,307 serving in the U.S. Army alone.
This year, the Ohio World War I Centennial Commission is collecting homemade poppies from across the state for the commemoration of the Armistice that ended World War I, and to recognize Ohio’s service members who served in that war. Homemade poppies will be collected until fall 2018 and all of the collected poppies sent to the Ohio History Center in Columbus will be put on display as part of the 100th anniversary of the Armistice that ended World War I.
