Women’s History Month is Not Over Yet!


Here are some more fun facts about women in Ohio history.

Where did the Temperance Crusade begin?  In December 1873 Eliza Jane Trimble Thompson lead the women of Hillsboro, Ohio to protest the sale of alcohol in the town. The protests in Hillsboro spread across the state. Many of the women involved in these protests became members of the Womens Christian Temperance Union.

Who were the first women elected to serve in the Ohio House of Representatives LuLu Gleason, Adelaide Sterling Ott, May M. Van Wye, and Nettie M. Clapp were the first women elected to the Ohio House of Representatives. They were elected in 1922 and took office in 1923.

Who were the first women elected to serve in the Ohio Senate? Nettie B. Loughhead and Maude C. Waitt were the first women elected to the Ohio House of Representatives. They were elected in 1922 and took office in 1923.

Who was the first African American woman in the country elected Lieutenant Governor? In 2002 Jeanette B. Bradley was the African American woman in the nation elected to the office of Lieutenant Governor.

Who was the first woman elected to a statewide office in Ohio? Gertrude Donahey was the first woman elected to a statewide office when she elected Ohio State Auditor in 1970. She was called the First Lady of Ohio Finance.

Who was the first woman to hold the position of Speaker of the Ohio House of Representatives? Jo Ann Davidson was elected Speaker of the Ohio House of Representatives in 1995 and held this position until 2001.

Did an Ohio woman enlist in the Civil War? Mary Scaberry from Columbus, Ohio enlisted in the 52nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry under the name Charles Freeman in 1862. It was discovered that she was a woman when she was admitted to the hospital.

Who were the female students killed at Kent State University on May 4, 1970?  Sandra Scheuer and Allison Krause were the two female students killed when Ohio National Guard troops opened fire on students protesting the expansion of the Vietnam War into Cambodia on May 4, 1970.

Who was a decorated military nurse from Ohio? Helen G. McClelland was part of an American surgical team sent to the British front in World War I. She risked her life to save a fellow nurse who was wounded. McClelland was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, our nations second highest combat award.
