As we approach the 250th anniversary of American independence in 2026, America 250-Ohio and the Ohio History Connection invite you to take part in an inspiring statewide initiative: The Revolutionary War Veterans Graves Project.
In collaboration with the Ohio State Historic Preservation Office, Terracon Consultants, Inc., and local chapters of the Sons and Daughters of the American Revolution, this project seeks to identify, document, and map the final resting places of an estimated 7,000 Revolutionary War patriots buried in Ohio.
This is a unique opportunity to connect with Ohio's rich history and ensure that the sacrifices of these patriots are remembered for generations to come.

Note: the information provided in this map is for general informational purposes only and has not been independently verified to date.
Final mapping and verification of all entries will occur after the project closes in the Spring of 2026.
In early 2025, we committed to begin a campaign to record the gravestones of American Revolutionary War veterans and patriots buried in Ohio. This effort, the first of its kind in the state, calls on all Ohioans to participate in field data collection. With over 7,000 veteran’s graves to document, WE NEED YOU to enlist as a Public Researcher!
JOIN US in the great task remaining before us—preserving the promise of those who pledged their lives, fortunes, and sacred honor, so that we may here resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain! It is our sacred duty, and privilege, to document the past so that generations yet unborn and unnamed may know the sacrifice and achievement of their fore-bearers.
For more information on contributing to the effort visit the Grave Marker & Cemetery Collection portal. All Public Researchers who do not wish to remain anonymous will be acknowledged for their contribution to the effort.
We understand some users are experiencing issues, especially after downloading the Survey123 app. The most common problem is not finding the survey forms or being prompted to log in. We’ve updated the Field Collection Instructions to make the process easier. Please pay special attention to Page 2 of the instructions. After installing the Survey123 app, you must access the Grave Marker Survey Form and the Cemetery Survey Form using the specific links (or QR codes) provided in the guide. This step is essential to load the forms into your app. You do not need to create an account or pay for Survey123. If you're being asked to log in or subscribe, please revisit the instructions to ensure you’re following the correct access steps.
A great place to start in the DAR Revolutionary War Records search site. You can search for the City or County you are researching in, and that will bring up a list of the veterans documented to be buried in that area. Using this, along with websites like Find A Grave can help to narrow down your search. You can also see our Resources for Researching Veterans section below for more.
Check in with our Live Results Dashboard often to see what graves and cemeteries have already been collected. Using the map's search bar, you can search for a veteran by last name or cemetery by cemetery name to see if they have been previously documented.
NOTE: The information provided is for general informational purposes only and has not been independently verified to date. Final mapping and verification of all data will occur after the close of the Grave Marker & Cemetery Collection Portal at the end of 2025.
While some aspects can be done from home, like looking up veteran names and cemetery locations, this project is all about documenting current information - both photographs and GPS location. While older records and local surveys are incredibly valuable, what is unique about this project is that all information will have been captured in 2025 - a relatively short window of time - giving us a snapshot of the current conditions of grave markers. This will be an incredible asset to future researchers for generations to come.
Absolutely! Please see the Guide to Field Collection for Public Researchers for contact information to begin the process of sharing your documentation.
We recommend contacting the landowner to request permission before entering any private property to document graves. If access is not possible, you can still submit information about the graves or cemetery. Any details you can provide are still valuable to the project.
The collection of grave marker and cemetery information by Public Researchers will continue through May 4, 2026. At that time, the Grave Marker and Cemetery Portal will close so that the results can be reviewed, verified, and finalized. The completed survey results will be published by July 4, 2026.
Although active data collection will conclude in 2026, our commitment to this project does not end there. The Ohio State Historic Preservation Office and the Ohio History Connection will continue to maintain and update this important database, providing the public with with tools to contribute and ensure the information remains accurate and current.
