Not long after the start of the war, Britain began closing in on Ohio borders, taking Michigan to the north and sending their Native American allies to raid multiple areas in Ohio. Major battles fought and won on Ohio soil would turn the tables and establish Ohio’s momentous role in the War of 1812. Serving as a key battleground in the war, Ohio was the site of multiple victories including the Battle of Fort Meigs and the Battle of Fort Stephenson. These victories aided in securing Ohio and established Ohio as the state we know today. Many historic sites and markers throughout Ohio commemorate prolific battles, people, and events involved in the War of 1812.
